farewell Foleo

A while back, I had signed up for information when a swanky new computer product became available - one that I thought was a great idea. Tonight I received an email indicating that I was more or less alone in my thinking:

after careful deliberation, I [the president of Palm] have decided to cancel the Foleo mobile companion product in its current configuration

I loved the idea of a lightweight instant-on web device. Apparently I was all alone.

I can't help but think, "Oh, all that R&D! What a waste!"

I know - they had a working product, no less - it doesn't seem like it would take any effort to just sell however many they had. Ah well - that's companies for you. There's a lot of comment on it today. I put my money where my mouth was on this one - I have 20 shares of Palm stock. Needless to say, not a profitable bet.

I was reading that the current buzz is that they aren't scrapping the product, they are scrapping its use of linux as an operating system. I believe I read that they are going to focus on the palm OS and release the same product with that software. That may just be the rumor mill, and I couldn't find the article to reference, so this may all just be smoke and wind.
