awkward turtle

OK - this is totally random, and unrelated to anything, but while searching for the article I actually want to post about, I ran across this article on massively, concerning Everquest's upcoming book celebrating ten years. Perhaps it's just me, who never ever goes to cons, but that photo seems really awkward.

You know, I still can't wrap my head around the whole Penny Arcade Expo thing. The Penny Arcade phenomenon was crazy enough, but now the Expo is huge. Crazy big. I try to imagine what went through those guys' heads the day they realized they had become the gaming industry. I'm sure it's in the blog somewhere, but I'm not quite curious enough to wander through six years of posts a few at a time....

WoW is the new Second Life

What's that you say? A conference in World of Warcraft? What fun! Apparently between sessions on virtual worlds and the like, they'll do raids. The swag bag apparently includes cash, and a pet. Cool!

A session at GDC was devoted to dissecting portal. Some of the responses were quite good:
Q) Do they think having girls on the team was partially responsible for the uniqueness of the game? A) Swift says she's not sure ... Wolpaw says, "Having girls on the team makes the room smell better."

you can read the whole thing, which has some interesting commentary on small team game design and playtesting, here.

GDC is just too much

GDC is killing me! There's obviously a whole lot happening, but I'd much prefer to separate the wheat from the chaff than post about 348 new games, most of which will probably be rehashes of something else.

There was a discussion on the future of MMOs that I had high hopes for, but it let me down big time.

So overall, I'm going to wait and see what comes - so far I haven't seen anything that makes me jump up and down.
