Takachiho Gorge

Back to June, 2001

Takachiho gorge is, according to legend, where the sun Goddess Amaterasu, hid in a cave because she was distressed by her younger brother's mischief. This brought darkness to heaven and earth. The other gods who wanted the sun back had Ame-no-uzume-no-mikoto start a silly dance. These dances are still performed at a nearby temple, and although I couldn't find the bloody thing, some other people have.

The next 8 photos, of sculptures comprised of pine cones and wood and somesuch, are for a festival held in the area. As you can see from the photos, they are mounted on carts which are then dragged through the town.
