I'm a native Michigander, but have lived quite a number of places. When I come home, I try to eat tasty food. These are the restaurants I've found around Michigan that I would recommend to someone looking for good food, good atmosphere, or (hopefully) both.

The Fleetwood
Smoky little trailer with all the flair of any 50's diner and the most astonishingly good breakfast foods. You must try the hippy hash! Note that unlike most of my recommendations, this one is strictly down-market - cash only, for example.

Livonia (suburb of Detroit)

Akasaka - Japanese. This is where the Embassy people took us before we moved to Japan, which should be recommendation enough for anyone.
