China <- My 2001 Trip Around the World <- Home
Considering all the hype, I figured no trip to China would really be complete without a visit to the three gorges. China is building a massive dam which will fill the canyons with water in exchange for hydroelectric power. The returns have been questioned by the international community, but thus far the project seems to be moving ahead. I've heard rumours it will be delayed due to the increase in tourism, but for the moment the project has not been cancelled. So I flew down from Beijing and caught a passenger ferry cruising down the river. Rumour has it there are also ferries build for westerners which cost more and have more amenities, but I had a great time on the boat I was on. |

I took an overnight train back to Beijing and met up with Lindsay again. Her family flew into town (or had flown into town) and we did the tourist things with them for a bit, taking in the Balshoi Ballet Company and the Great Wall. Lindsay's brother Martin and I caught a bus out to one of the places you can hike and we wandered perhaps five or ten kilometers along the wall before stopping for a bite to eat (at the Lonely Planet restaurant) and heading back to town. |
