Repeal Day

Jason pointed me to a post about today, December 5th, which is Repeal Day in the US - the day the 21st amendment came into force, allowing alcohol in the US.

This reminded me (and having seen a few of the Dewars ads) of a conversation I had a few weeks ago... one of those "I can't believe I'm having this conversation" things in which I commenting on how prohibition didn't work the first time, it would not work again. To which I got a blank stare and was asked what prohibition was... and the individual I was talking to, and another person standing near by were in absolute shock that we had an amendment banning alcohol and then repealing said amendment. Foolishly, I assumed when talking to highly educated folk, this was not uncommon knowledge... which leads me to the point--will viewers even get the whole Repeal Day campaign? And, really, with enough scotch, does it matter?

I love the idea that everyone knows the name Al Capone, gangsters, etc. etc., but that they might not know about prohibition. I also love the entire roaring '20s thing happened at the same time alcohol was illegal.
